House in Sakuragaoka
A Single-Story Home Designed for Spacious Living
This compact single-story residence was designed on a site of approximately 250 square meters (about 2,690 sq ft), bordered by a road to the south and neighboring houses on the east, west, and north. Despite its modest footprint, the design seeks to create a home that feels open and generous.
The project coincided with the beginning of our serious exploration into high-performance thermal insulation and airtight construction. To fulfill the client's request for "a warm home where the family can live freely and comfortably," thermal performance and spatial composition were developed as an integrated design strategy.
A Courtyard Balancing Openness and Privacy
The central concept of this project is "to be closed while remaining open."
Responding to the site's southern road frontage, the living, dining, and kitchen (LDK) space was positioned on the north side of the house. A courtyard and large glazed openings were placed to its south, allowing abundant natural light while shielding the interior from views along the street.
Conversely, the bedrooms facing the road were designed with carefully controlled openings to maintain privacy. As a result, the house presents a restrained and closed exterior, yet unfolds into a bright, light-filled interior once entered. This contrast between outside and inside enhances the sense of openness experienced within.
The children's rooms and the living-dining area face each other across the courtyard, allowing family members to sense one another's presence through the glazing. This subtle visual connection encourages natural interaction while maintaining appropriate independence.
A Floor Plan that Creates Comfortable Distances Between Generations
The plan also anticipates the possibility of future multigenerational living. A room for the parents' generation is located in the northwest corner, providing an appropriate balance between proximity and privacy.
Wet areas are centrally organized, allowing efficient circulation and easy access from every room. The washroom and dressing room are separated to improve usability, while the laundry room is designed as a thermally insulated semi-outdoor space, making indoor drying practical throughout the year.
To maximize storage, a loft extending along the entire southern side of the house was created, accessible from both the master bedroom and the children's rooms. The layout carefully balances functionality with the individual needs of each family member.
A Dynamic Section Shaped by the Site
The sectional design takes advantage of the site's gentle southward slope by introducing subtle changes in floor level that naturally define different living zones. The southern bedrooms are set one step lower, with the floor gradually rising toward the north.
The ceiling follows a complementary rhythm, lowering, rising, and lowering again from south to north. This creates ceiling heights ranging from approximately 3.8 meters at the southern end to 1.95 meters at the northern end—a difference of nearly two meters.
Rather than being a purely formal gesture, this zigzag roof section responds simultaneously to daylight, privacy, and the desired spatial scale, resulting in a rational and expressive architectural solution.
Exploring a Prefabricated Large-Panel Timber Construction System
From a construction standpoint, this project explored the use of a prefabricated large-scale insulated timber wall panel system.
Large wall panels, incorporating windows, insulation, and weather-resistant membranes, were manufactured at a prefabrication facility before being transported to the site and assembled by crane. In this project, the system was extended to include the roof, while glass wool insulation was adopted throughout.
Because this construction method demands exceptional precision, close collaboration between the design team and the fabrication facility began from the earliest design stages. Although the system achieved a significant improvement in construction efficiency, limitations in supply chains and industry collaboration at the time prevented its widespread adoption.
Today, however, as labor shortages and rising construction costs continue to challenge the building industry, this prefabricated system offers renewed potential by substantially reducing on-site work.
Comfort Through Performance and Natural Materials
The house combines a high-performance thermal envelope with panel radiator heating and a balanced mechanical ventilation system, creating a comfortable indoor environment with minimal temperature variation and consistently fresh air.
An external venetian blind installed outside the large south-facing opening of the LDK effectively controls solar heat gain during the summer months.
The exterior is clad in Yakushima cedar, selected for the richness of its natural aging process. Inside, solid pine flooring, Japanese red pine, and shina plywood were chosen for their warmth, light appearance, and cost efficiency. Kobau paper—typically used as an underlayment—was reinterpreted as the finished wall and ceiling surface, introducing the soft texture and tactile quality unique to paper.
The result is a home that seamlessly combines the comfort of high-performance building technology with the warmth, richness, and tranquility of natural materials.
