House in Okino

A House that Makes the Most of a Generous Site
This single-story residence, with a total floor area of approximately 110 square meters, was designed on a spacious 660-square-meter site in a suburban residential neighborhood of Sendai.
The site faces a road to the north, beyond which stands an elementary school overlooking the entire property. On the east, west, and south sides, neighboring houses closely surround the site, making privacy a significant concern.
In general, the larger the site, the greater the cost of landscaping and site development, leaving a more limited budget for the building itself. At the same time, the client expressed concerns about privacy, security, and potential intrusion from the surrounding neighborhood.
The challenge of this project was therefore twofold: to create a compact house that fully embraces the generosity of the site while achieving both openness and a strong sense of privacy.

The Idea of a House in a Park

Rather than solving these issues with walls or fences, the project sought to answer them through architecture itself.
Instead of enclosing the property, the site is gently opened to the surrounding neighborhood, with landscaping deliberately kept to a minimum. The house quietly stands within an expansive open space, almost like a pavilion in a park. This idea—a house set within a park—became the conceptual foundation of the project.
The building is positioned at the center of the site and rotated diagonally so that it does not directly face either the street or neighboring houses. This diagonal placement creates generous diagonal distances across the site, producing a sense of openness and psychological comfort beyond the site's actual dimensions.
The deep crimson exterior was inspired by Parc de la Villette, designed by Bernard Tschumi, which profoundly influenced me during my student years. The vivid red architectural follies scattered throughout the lush landscape symbolize a powerful dialogue between architecture and landscape—a relationship that this house seeks to reinterpret in its own context.

Maximum Openness with Minimum Openings

Balancing privacy and construction costs, the house was designed as compactly as possible, with every opening carefully considered.
Each elevation contains only a single window. By eliminating unnecessary openings, construction costs were reduced while views and privacy were precisely controlled. On the street-facing side, low-level windows admit soft natural light while preventing direct views from outside.
Although the exterior presents a closed appearance, stepping inside reveals carefully framed views that create a surprising sense of spaciousness. By locating the building at the center of the site, generous setbacks eliminate the need for curtains, allowing the occupants to enjoy both openness and privacy.
Rather than creating a conventional entrance, visitors are led directly into the dining space from outside, softening the boundary between interior and exterior and reinforcing the continuity of the spatial experience.
The project explores a simple question: how can the purest sense of openness be achieved with the fewest architectural elements? This house represents one possible answer.

Spatial Experience Created by a Low Ceiling

Another key exploration of the project lies in its architectural proportions.
The exterior walls were kept to a height of just 2.6 meters, giving the building a modest, human-scaled presence. Inside, the dining room ceiling was intentionally lowered to 1.9 meters.
By compressing the interior vertically, the surrounding landscape is perceived as significantly more expansive.
The low ceiling gently embraces the occupants, making the sky and garden feel even more dramatic by contrast. Above the dining space, a recessed skylight introduces daylight from above, extending the experience of space not only horizontally but also vertically.
As one moves through the house, changing perspectives continually reveal new relationships between the interior and the landscape. Despite its compact size, the house offers a surprisingly layered spatial experience.
The client was initially surprised by these unconventional proportions. After moving in, however, they came to appreciate the low ceiling as one of the home's greatest qualities.

The Origin of My Design Philosophy

Creating truly comfortable spaces requires more than following conventional standards or accepted dimensions. It demands reconsidering architectural scale through the way the human body actually perceives space.
By carefully orchestrating the building's placement, section, and openings, this project became my first complete exploration of what I now describe as "opening while remaining enclosed."
Spatial richness is not determined simply by size. It emerges through the relationship between light and landscape, through carefully calibrated proportions, and through the way architecture is experienced by the human body.
The client later shared these words:
"Looking at the sky through the window every day has become one of the greatest pleasures of living here. The clouds, passing airplanes, the moon, and the changing night sky never look the same. I never grow tired of watching them."
House in Okino became the prototype for the spatial philosophy I have continued to pursue ever since—a way of creating architecture that remains enclosed while opening itself to the surrounding world. It marks the true beginning of my current design philosophy.
