大磯の家


趣味を楽しみ、人生を楽しむ

神奈川県湘南エリア・茅ヶ崎市を拠点とする地元工務店、松尾建設の依頼を受け、ショールーム兼別荘として設計した建物である。
敷地は湘南西部の大磯町、急坂を上った先の閑静な住宅街の一角にあり、東方向には相模湾の美しい眺望が広がる。初めてこの高台の敷地を訪れた時から、その景色を活かし、何か新しい試みができそうだという予感があった。
湘南は多くの人が「一度は住んでみたい」と憧れる場所だ。マリンスポーツやポップカルチャーの聖地であり、高級住宅地やリゾート地としての顔も持つ。住民は趣味やライフスタイルに強いこだわりを持つ人が多い印象がある。そうした湘南らしい「人生を楽しむ空気感」を、この空間にも映し出したいと考えた。


限られた空間を広く見せる工夫

建設時期は、ちょうどウッドショックによる建築コスト高騰と重なった。建物規模は32坪に抑えつつ、限られた空間を有効活用し、実際の数値以上に広く感じられる工夫を施している。LDKは眺望を最大限楽しむため、2階に配置した。座った時の居心地を優先してダイニングの天井高は1950mmと低く抑え、長時間立って過ごすキッチンは高天井として圧迫感を軽減。I型キッチンは家具のように空間に溶け込み、ワンルーム的な広がりを演出した。アイランド型が主流の時代にあえて選んだI型キッチンから、その魅力を改めて発見できた。


海を切り取る仕掛け

三方向は道路や隣家に面するため閉じ、東側のみを大きく開放し、相模湾の風景を強調した。敷地はほぼ矩形だが、建物は直角台形とし、東側の壁面を海岸線に沿うように斜めに振った。その結果、開口部の面積をより広く取ることができた。
1階・2階にテラスを設け、屋上にはルーフバルコニーを設置。これらをつなぐのが螺旋階段である。省スペース性に加え、昇降するたびに視点が変化する楽しさがある。特にこの建物では、1階では抑えられていた外の気配が、2階に上がる瞬間に大開口を通して一気に海へと開けるよう設計し、劇的な空間体験を生み出した。


暮らしを楽しむ器として

玄関正面の土間ホールは、趣味の空間としても活用できる広さを確保。サーフボードや自転車などの収納も可能とした。庭やテラスではアウトドアの趣味を楽しみ、ルーフバルコニーからは海を一望できる。さらに将来的にサウナを設置できるスペースも用意した。
防水技術の進化により、近年は一般住宅でも屋上空間を積極的に提案している。屋根というデッドスペースを有効利用し、建蔽率や容積率の制限を受けずに暮らしの幅を広げられる屋上は、魅力的なコンポーネントだと考えている。


住宅性能からも心地よさを実現

断熱材は施工性・性能・コストのバランスを考慮して最適化。窓は局所に抑えつつ、東面の大開口にはドイツ・ユニルクス社の高性能木製サッシとトリプルガラスを採用し、断熱等級７を実現した。湘南は温暖な気候のため、東北に比べて住宅性能に力を入れるメーカーは少ないが、この断熱性能は夏の暑さにも有効であり、独自の心地よさを生み出している。
外壁には経年変化を楽しめる素材の屋久島杉のすのこ貼りを提案した。施工手間のかかる上質な仕上げであるが、松尾建設さんは非常にレベルの高い施工を行う工務店で、新しいものをどんどん取り入れようというポジティブな推進力に、私自身大いに刺激を受けた。今後もともに成長していけることを心から楽しみにしています。

Oiso House

Enjoying Hobbies, Enjoying Life

This residence was designed as both a showroom and a vacation home, commissioned by Matsuo Construction, a local builder based in Chigasaki City in the Shonan area of Kanagawa Prefecture.

The site is located in Oiso Town, on the western side of Shonan, in a quiet residential neighborhood at the top of a steep slope. To the east, it opens onto a beautiful view of Sagami Bay. From the very first visit to this elevated site, I had a sense that its panoramic view could inspire something unique.

Shonan is a place many people dream of living in at least once in their lives. It is both a hub for marine sports and pop culture and a region known for luxury homes and resorts. The residents, too, are often associated with refined hobbies and lifestyle preferences. I wanted this house to reflect the atmosphere of Shonan—a place that celebrates the joy and richness of life.



Making Limited Space Feel Spacious

Construction coincided with the “wood shock” period, when building costs surged. The floor area was therefore limited to 32 tsubo (approx. 106 m²). Within this compact footprint, we sought to maximize usability while incorporating design strategies that would make the spaces feel larger than their numbers suggest.

The living-dining-kitchen (LDK) was placed on the second floor to take full advantage of the ocean view. The dining ceiling was intentionally lowered to 1950mm to create a cozy feel when seated, while the kitchen ceiling was raised higher to avoid a sense of pressure for those standing. The linear kitchen was treated like furniture to blend with the interior, giving the room a sense of continuity. At a time when island kitchens are becoming the mainstream, this project rediscovered the strengths of the simple I-shaped layout.



Framing the Sea

Three sides of the house face neighboring properties and roads, so they are kept closed to secure privacy, while the east side is opened up to showcase the view of Sagami Bay. Although the lot itself is almost rectangular, the building footprint was intentionally designed as a right-angled trapezoid, with the eastern wall angled toward the coastline. This created larger openings and stronger visual connections to the sea.

Terraces were provided on both the first and second floors, with a rooftop balcony above. These levels are linked by a spiral staircase, which not only saves space but also changes the perspective as one ascends or descends. In this house, the design allows the restrained sense of enclosure on the first floor to suddenly give way, at the turn of the stairs, to a dramatic panorama revealed through the expansive second-floor openings.



A Vessel for Living Well

The entrance opens to a doma-style hall, designed large enough to serve as a hobby space and to store surfboards or bicycles. The garden and terraces invite outdoor activities, while the rooftop balcony offers sweeping views of the ocean. Space has also been reserved for the future installation of a sauna.

Thanks to advances in waterproofing technology, I have increasingly proposed rooftop living spaces even in ordinary homes. Rooftops, which often become dead space, can be effectively transformed into valuable living areas without being restricted by building coverage or floor area ratio regulations. They provide a powerful way to enrich daily life.



Comfort Through Performance

Insulation materials and thicknesses were carefully optimized for performance, constructability, and cost. Openings were minimized except for the large eastern façade, which features high-performance wooden sash windows with triple glazing by Unilux of Germany. This enabled the house to achieve the highest insulation rating, Grade 7. While Shonan’s warm climate means many builders in the region focus less on energy performance compared to Tohoku, this level of insulation also works effectively against the summer heat, ensuring comfort that stands apart.

For the exterior, Yakushima cedar slats were chosen for their natural aging qualities. Though labor-intensive, the finish was executed with remarkable craftsmanship by Matsuo Construction, a company distinguished by both technical excellence and a positive drive to embrace new ideas. Their forward-looking approach has been a great source of inspiration to me, and I truly look forward to continuing to grow together.
