3棟が織りなす、環境に寄り添う平屋住宅

仙台市北部の閑静な住宅街に計画した、若い家族のための平屋住宅である。近年、都市部では大きな敷地を細分化し、コンパクトな住宅を複数建てるケースが増えているが、本計画はその逆を行く。建主の実家と、隣接する貸家という二棟の2階建て住宅が建っていた敷地を一体化し、一棟の平屋として再構成した。

計画地は、40年前に宅地開発された画一的な区画が並ぶニュータウンの一角。同規模の家々が整然と並ぶ中にあって、周辺環境に対してスケール感を逸脱しないよう慎重に構えた。建主の希望が平屋であったことも幸いし、高さ方向のボリュームを抑えつつ、敷地の元々の高低差を活かすことを考えた。グラウンドレベルには塀と駐車スペース、ポーチ、テラスの一部を収め、そこから1.5m高い元の建物のレベルを主要階とすることで、住居部分のボリュームを実質1.5階分に留めている。

また、建物のスケール感を周囲に馴染ませる工夫として、住居を3つの用途別ユニットに分節。右にスキップフロアの趣味室と収納室、中央にLDK棟、左に寝室等のプライベート棟を配置し、それぞれを玄関ホールと廊下で緩やかに接続している。塀の奥に直方体のボリュームが3つ並ぶ構成は、圧迫感を与えず、街並みに静かに寄り添う姿をつくり出している。

道路に面するコンクリート塀は建物を守る殻のような存在であり、プライバシーを確保する役割も担う。はつり加工によって質感を与え、周辺風景への馴染みも意識した。さらに屋久島杉による木格子を組み合わせて温かみを加え、柔らかなアールを持たせることで、訪れる人を自然と建物内へ誘導する。木格子の隙間からは光や風が室内へ届き、居住空間に心地よさをもたらす。

建物と塀の間には2つの異なる高さのテラスを設けた。LDKに隣接するテラスは室内と同レベルに揃え、セカンドリビングとしての利用を促す。一方、プライベート棟に接するテラスはグラウンドレベルまで下げ、隠れ家的な落ち着きある空間とした。植栽には広葉樹を中心に選定し、テラス空間に季節の彩りと軽やかなコントラストを添えている。

内部空間では、1.5階分の高さを活かし、各棟ごとに天井高を変化させることで視線に豊かなリズムを生み出している。LDK棟は切妻天井とし、中央は3.15m、南北の壁際は2mに設定。天井が開口部に向かって傾斜することで、視線は自然と庭へと導かれる。趣味室は2.2m、プライベート棟は2mとし、全体的に落ち着いたスケール感で包み込む空間とした。

リビングから庭を眺めると、向かい側の住宅の存在は塀によって遮られ、カーテンやブラインドの必要ない開放的な暮らしが可能に。さらに、北側にはパントリー・キッチン・洗濯室・洗面・脱衣・浴室を直線的に配置し日常動線の効率化を図り、快適で質の高い住環境を実現している。



Takamori House

A One-Story Residence Woven from Three Volumes, Harmonizing with Its Surroundings

This single-story home, designed for a young family, is located in a quiet residential neighborhood in the northern part of Sendai. While many urban areas today see large plots subdivided to build multiple compact homes, this project takes the opposite approach. The clients combined two adjacent lots—one formerly occupied by their family home and the other a rental property—each with a two-story house, to construct a single, unified residence.

The site lies within a suburban development created some 40 years ago, characterized by uniformly sized lots and similarly scaled homes. Care was taken to ensure that the new building would not disrupt the existing scale or rhythm of the surrounding neighborhood. The client’s wish for a single-story house made it possible to control vertical volume, and the site’s natural elevation differences were cleverly used: the lower ground level was reserved for a retaining wall, parking, porch, and part of a terrace, while the main living level was placed 1.5 meters higher—matching the elevation of the previous buildings—resulting in a building volume roughly equivalent to 1.5 stories.

To further reduce the building’s perceived mass and help it blend with its context, the residence is divided into three functional volumes: a hobby room with a skip-floor structure and storage beneath on the right, the central LDK (living, dining, kitchen) core, and private quarters including bedrooms on the left. These are gently linked by a hallway and entry foyer. Seen from the street beyond the front wall, the composition of three rectangular volumes creates a modest rhythm that softens the building’s presence and allows it to quietly integrate with the neighborhood.

A concrete wall facing the street acts as a protective shell, ensuring privacy. The surface is treated with a chiseled finish to soften its appearance and allow it to blend into the surrounding streetscape. To warm the material palette, a screen of Yakushima cedar slats with gentle curves was added, guiding visitors naturally toward the entrance. Light and air filter through the gaps, enhancing comfort within the home.

Between the house and the concrete wall, two terraces at different levels were created. The terrace adjacent to the LDK aligns with the interior floor level, encouraging use as a second living area. The terrace beside the private quarters steps down to ground level, forming a cozy, retreat-like zone. Carefully selected deciduous trees provide seasonal variation and a soft visual contrast within the outdoor spaces.

Inside, ceiling heights vary across the three volumes, taking advantage of the overall 1.5-story elevation to bring visual rhythm to the experience of moving through the home. The LDK volume features a gabled ceiling peaking at 3.15 meters and sloping down to 2 meters along the north and south walls, drawing the eye naturally toward the garden through the angled roof. The hobby room is set at 2.2 meters, while the private rooms are kept at a calming 2 meters, creating a spatial scale that feels intimate and composed.

From the living room, the carefully positioned wall obscures the neighboring house across the street, enabling an open lifestyle free from curtains or blinds. Along the north side, a highly functional sequence of rooms—pantry, kitchen, laundry, washroom, changing room, and bathroom—is arranged in a linear flow that supports seamless daily living. This thoughtful layout results in a high-quality residence that balances comfort, privacy, and environmental sensitivity.
